Formby Point Squirrel Sanctuary

I had never been to the squirrel sanctuary at Formby Point (near Southport) before.  My wife had been there a few times before and I had said a few times that it would be nice to go.  When you arrive you pay the entrance fee per car rather than per person, at that point you can also buy a bag of nuts in the hope that you will be able to feed them to a squirrel or two.  I have to admit I was kind of expecting to be fighting the squirrels off based on the reports I had had from others after their previous visits but you do have to look out for them. While you were in amongst the trees there was no indication at all of the rather strong wind blowing in from the see.

The cost of the nuts for the squirrels were prett cheap, just as well due to the fact the children decided to throw the nuts in the hope that a squirrel would come, I am sure they were all around just waiting to make their move.

Unfortunately the beach was closed due to an oil slick, which we didn’t mind on this occasion due to the amount of sand being blown over the sand dunes that line the coast.  I managed to get sand in my ears and even some hidden places.

Red Squirrels are now a protected species and are along the coast from Crosby to Southport. Formby Squirrel Reserve is where to head for your chance to see these now rare Red Squirrels in their natural habitat.
